"Born in Dedham, Essex, her father was Millar Watt the cartoonist, illustrator and creator of the pioneering comic strip 'POP' of the Daily Sketch.  Her mother Amy Watt was also a painter.

Mary was educated in Cornwall and Devon and studied at the St. Ives School of Art under Leonard Fuller who first opened the school in 1938.  During the War she worked as a draughtsman for the Charts Department of the Admiralty, relocated to Bath.  Afterwards the family removed to Knightsbridge in London and she completed a five-year Diploma at the RA schools, earning silver medals for painting and drawing and the David Murray scholarship for landscape."
